(Reuters) – Delta Air Lines Inc (NYSE 🙂 is in talks with governments to add more quarantine-free travel to international destinations after the first two flights to Europe this week, a US airline executive said Tuesday .
The aviation industry has broadly supported the creation of such agreements, travel corridors and “bubbles” where passengers who test negative for the novel coronavirus can fly without lengthy quarantines to stop COVID-19 to revive tarnished demand.
The U.S. carrier’s two flights, which depart Atlanta to Amsterdam on Tuesday, require travelers to run multiple tests for the coronavirus and are limited to passengers making important trips.
Even if COVID-19 vaccinations start this week in the US and Canada, airlines see testing as the fastest way to resume international travel without quarantine, as vaccination campaigns will take some time.
“This is the first step,” Perry Cantarutti, senior vice president of alliances and international at Delta, told reporters. “It could help us develop similar programs in other markets.”
