DORTMUND, Germany (Reuters) -Eintracht Frankfurt striker Andre Silva headed the winning goal in the 87th minute to stun hosts Borussia Dortmund 2-1 on Saturday and give his team a significant boost in the application for a top 4 result and to give a place in the next Champions League of the season.
The Portuguese headed in a cross from Filip Kostic on the far post for his 22nd goal of the season to bring Frankfurt to fourth place on 50 points, seven ahead of Borussia Dortmund in fifth place.
The four best teams qualify for the group stage of the Champions League.
“Too sloppy, too unfocused, technically just not good enough,” said defender Mats Hummels, who scored Dortmund’s goal. “We had to make better use of the good chances we had. In that respect, other teams are ahead of us.
“We had situations that should have had clear scoring opportunities. We just couldn’t turn them into anything.”
Dortmund will face Manchester City in the quarter-finals of the Champions League next week.
Frankfurt took the lead when Dortmund’s Nico Schulz hit his own goalkeeper incorrectly with a header in the 11th minute. The visitors were also unlucky not to receive a penalty from Thomas Delaney for a clear handball.
Instead, it was Dortmund who scored at halftime when Hummels equalized in the penalty area.
Dortmund striker Erling Haaland was in the spotlight at a meeting of his representatives in Barcelona all week, but the Norwegian couldn’t seize any of his few chances.
Frankfurt was sharper after the break and won a well-deserved winner after narrowly hitting Silva, Kostic and Stefan Ilsanker in the second half.
VfL Wolfsburg defeated Cologne 1-0 and stayed in third place with 54 points.
Leader Bayern Munich prevailed after a 1-0 win against RB Leipzig with 64 points at the top with 64 points. Leipzig, in second place, is 57.
