DUBAI (Reuters) fire fighters were working to put out a fire after a pipeline to Iran’s second largest refinery ruptured and went up in flames on Sunday, Iranian news outlets reported.

“The fire has not been contained but is under control. Its smoke is irritating but not enough to injure anyone and flames have not reached people’s homes,” said Khosro Kiani, an emergency officer in southwest Iran. where the fire occurred. said the semi-official Tasnim news agency.

Kiani said the oil had entered a difficult to access valley that fire extinguishers could not reach.

Oil ministry news agency SHANA said repair teams had shut down the Maroun pipeline, which feeds Iran’s second largest refinery, with a capacity of about 375,000 barrels a day.

According to analysts, Iran’s aging oil infrastructure has long been in need of refurbishment as refurbishment plans have been delayed by Western sanctions and local bureaucracy.

There have been several previous cases of spillage from the pipeline that have adversely affected agriculture and fisheries in the area, state news agency IRNA reported.
