MELBOURNE (Reuters) – Australian Open organizers said Friday that nothing has been decided on the quarantine for players coming to the Grand Slam, despite reports in local media that contestants may be able to isolate yourself.
The Age newspaper reported that the men’s association ATP has told players they will be allowed to train during their 14-day quarantine period before the Australian Open.
A tennis Australia spokesperson told Reuters that organizers are still awaiting approval from the Victoria state government to learn all the details about the first Grand Slam of the year, including information on how to practice during quarantine.
The organizers have had long discussions with the authorities about the COVID-19 protocols to be set for those arriving in Australia ahead of the Melbourne Park tournament, which is due to take place January 18-31.
State officials confirmed on Wednesday that the Melbourne Park tournament would take place, although it would likely take place a week or two after the scheduled start date and players would have to be quarantined.
Novak Djokovic, the number one man, recently urged authorities to ensure that players are allowed to train during quarantine, while Russian Daniil Medvedev said it was “dangerous” to stay in a hotel room for two weeks and then go straight to a Grand Slam.
Melbourne closed 28 days since the last reported locally acquired case of novel coronavirus infection on Friday.
Due to border restrictions between states and varying quarantine requirements from local governments across the country, TA plans to relocate all build-up tournaments for the Grand Slam to Victoria.
The report said the ATP Cup, the 24-nation men’s event that debuted as the Grand Slam opener this year in Brisbane, Perth and Sydney, would be canceled in 2021, despite other ATP and WTA preparatory events would take place.
ATP had no comment on the report, but the governing body is expected to release the 2021 calendar in early December.
TA said a decision on the ATP Cup has not yet been made and organizers will not be able to finalize the details of the Australian Open preparatory tournaments until the dates and quarantine details are established.
