MOSCOW (Reuters) – Three people were killed after an avalanche hit a ski resort near the arctic city of Norilsk late Friday, the local branch of the Russian ambulance service said.
The bodies of two adults and a young child were found during a search and rescue mission involving 242 people and 29 vehicles, the ministry said in a statement on Saturday. A 14-year-old boy was also hospitalized with frostbite.
Video footage showed rescue workers and volunteers fighting strong winds and frost all night to dig up buildings buried under snow and ice.
Unfavorable weather conditions, including snowstorms and strong winds, have made the rescuers’ work difficult, the rescue services said in a statement.
The Russian investigative committee said it had sent officials to Norilsk, a remote town of 180,000 people 300 km inside the Arctic Circle.
It has opened a criminal investigation to determine whether the owners of the buildings have taken adequate security measures. Attempts were still being made to determine who owned the four buildings that were entwined.
The avalanche covered a total area of 300 square meters. The management of the resort complex Gora Otdelnaya was quoted by the TASS news agency.
